The Green Mountain Playwright Retreat was created from a simple belief: playwrights need time, space, and community.

Writing a play can be lonely work. At the GMPR, writers can step away from the demands of everyday life and settle into their work. They might bring a play already in progress, start something completely new, or simply give themselves time to see what happens.

At the heart of the retreat are the Playwright Circles, small gatherings where writers can talk about their work, share ideas, ask questions, and support one another. These conversations are often where unexpected connections and creative breakthroughs happen.

The retreat also offers flexibility. Participants can stay on campus and choose a meal plan for an immersive, all inclusive retreat experience, or register for a day pass and make their own arrangements for lodging and meals. With Montpelier, Vermont’s Capital, as well as the village of Plainfield just short drives away, day participants can enjoy the freedom to explore the restaurants, cafes, and other offerings of Central Vermont while still being part of the retreat community.

Whether spending the weekend immersed at Goddard or creating a more independent retreat experience, the goal is the same: time to write, people to connect with, and space to let the work unfold.

The Green Mountain Playwright Retreat is open to participants of all stages in their careers who are 21 years of age or older. There is no application to attend and participants are accepted on a first come, first served basis.
